Neat Bottle Bar Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY

Another place in the ‘Ville that came highly recommended was Neat Bottle Bar, “Kentucky’s Dustiest Bourbon Bar.” For those wondering about the term dusty, it means an old bottle, as in being undisturbed and collecting dust on a shelf.  This is a positive reference in the whiskey world.  Old is good.  Unopened and old is even better.

My initial disappointment upon entering and learning they did not serve food, as I went there for dinner, was soon overturned as I eyed the bar shelves.  I immediately thought, “Dinner can wait.  Let’s see how this plays out.” I took the last open seat at the bar and was instantly included in conversations by couples on both sides of me. They were there to try some new pours.  Old pours.  Things you cannot find at most bars. I was sold. I had stumbled into a bar and a museum. Before I sampled a few pours I had immediately singled out, I went OFAF, of course.

Their House Old Fashioned was a JTS Brown Bottled In Bond Bourbon (100 proof). They add in Demerara syrup, bitters, orange oil and cherry.  It was quite tasty.  I was going to have another but was distracted by their vintage selections.  I was able to stumble into a conversation with the owner, who suggested a couple items.  First, I went with the Elijah Craig 12 Year.  A bottle I have seen online but have never had an opportunity to taste. Crossed that off the list.  Next, a 1973 Old Taylor.  This is a bottle I’ve only seen in old magazine advertisements. In fact, I have one framed in my cave. Overall, a couple of crazy pours at reasonable prices.

What is unique about Neat is they have their own Bottle Shop next door.  You could go as deep and crazy as your credit card could take you, but I spotted something budget friendly that I’ve always wanted-an Old Turkey 12 Year Japanese release. I was pleased with the score and since I drove, there was no need to concern myself with shipping.

Neat was a cool place.  I found it friendly, intimate, and comfortable.  National Geographic has ranked this as the #1 Bourbon Bar in America.  I can see why.  Make sure this is on your list to scratch off an old “Dusty” you’ve always wanted to try. Oh, and that dinner?  I walked down the street to Jack Fry’s and had a delicious steak.  It was a great evening and all ended well.
