There are currently 4.5 million podcasts in existence worldwide. That number is constantly growing. In the last three months, 487,000 new podcasts have been launched. They are becoming the most listened to medium. So, whether on walks, nighttime routines, workouts, etc.… podcasts have become a weekly, if not daily, event for many Americans.
At one of my recent group events this spring, there was a Public Relations professional in attendance. I suppose she liked what she heard and reached out to podcaster James Lewis, her close friend, to recommend me for his podcast. In turn, he reached out to me and invited me to be a guest on his Southern Character podcast. So, I felt honored to participate in this growing category.
We had a brief e-mail exchange followed by a phone call. We set a date, and James came into Nashville from Atlanta to record. I found a quiet spot in one of our conference rooms at work, and we knocked it down. I would describe it as equal parts fascinating and fearful.
I can tell you that when you have a microphone in your face, it gets very real very fast. It took me a few minutes to relax, and eventually I felt more comfortable. If there is another opportunity, I think I’ll feel better prepared.
It’s always tough for me to hear my own voice. I wanted it to turn out perfectly, so I can be a bit self-critical. But to be honest, aside from leaning too much on my crutch word of “umm,” I was mostly happy with the result. James is a comfortable interviewer, and we did share a few laughs that helped relax me.
