Life’s a Cherry!

You know I’m a stickler when it comes to a proper drink. In my world, this is typically an old fashioned. I stress using the right whiskey, the right ice, and the right cherry, and Luxardo’s are the goat.  Luxardo cherries are highly regarded for their superior quality and complex flavor profile, setting them apart from the bright red, artificially flavored maraschino cherries commonly found in grocery stores. Several factors contribute to their excellence.

The Marasca Cherry

Unlike standard maraschino cherries made from a variety of sweet cherries, Luxardo cherries are made exclusively from the sour Marasca cherry, a rare variety native to Italy. This cherry has a unique flavor and firm texture that holds up well during the candying process.

All Natural Ingredients

Luxardo cherries are free from the artificial colors, corn syrup, and preservatives that give typical maraschino cherries their vibrant red color and overly sugary taste. The deep, dark red-black color of Luxardo cherries is completely natural, coming from the Marasca cherries themselves and their juice.

The Candying Process

The cherries are candied and soaked in a rich syrup made from Marasca cherry juice and sugar. This process gives them a unique, bittersweet flavor with notes of almond, which comes from the cherry pits.

Flavor Depth

The result is a cherry with a balanced, sophisticated taste that is both sweet and tart. Their flavor is not one-dimensional like other brands; instead, it has a complex depth that complements a wide range of cocktails and desserts.

Versatility

While they are a popular garnish for classic cocktails like the Manhattan or Old Fashioned, Luxardo cherries and their flavorful syrup can be used in a variety of ways, including in baking, over ice cream, or in non-alcoholic beverages.

Yes, theses cherries are more expensive but so worth it in my book. Do the right thing. Spend the money and get the best flavor you can find. Don’t be afraid to take a teaspoon of the juice in the jar to assist in flavoring your cocktail. Leave the maraschinos for the children and their ice cream.
