While personal tastes vary, a clear consensus has formed around a few names that consistently dominate the conversation among experts and enthusiasts alike. If you are looking to stock your shelf with the heavy hitters of the current scene, these three brands are my choices most likely to earn a nod of approval from anyone who knows their stuff
When it comes to pure prestige and historical weight, it is impossible to ignore the Buffalo Trace family. This distillery, the oldest in the US, produces some of the most sought-after bottles in the world, including the legendary Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, the Pappy Van Winkle line, Weller, and the always popular Blanton’s. The consensus on Buffalo Trace is that they have mastered the art of the balanced pour. Their flagship bourbon is often cited as the gold standard for what a traditional Kentucky spirit should taste like, offering those classic notes of vanilla and caramel that everyone looks for. Even their more accessible bottles carry a reputation for quality, making them a safe bet for any occasion.
Another name that has seen a massive surge in consensus lately is Michter’s. This brand has spent the last few years winning over the world of high-end bars and serious collectors. They are known for a very specific production process where they enter the barrel at a lower proof than most, which many believe results in a richer and, smoother flavor. Whether you are sipping their small batch bourbon or their highly decorated rye, the consensus is that the brand represents a premium level of consistency. They have even been voted as a top admired brand globally by industry professionals, proving that their reach goes far beyond just local fans. I can attest to the 10 Year Bourbon and Rye. Their 20 and 25 year old selections are out of my price range, but most experts agree that these are two of the best bottles on the planet.
Finally, for those who appreciate the industry’s deep roots, Heaven Hill, located in Bardstown, Kentucky, remains a titan of taste. They are responsible for the Old Fitzgerald line and Elijah Craig, a brand that many credit with the very invention of bourbon as we know it. The consensus here is all about depth and warmth. Their barrel-proof releases are frequently named among the best of the year by critics for delivering an intense, unfiltered experience. Heaven Hill manages to bridge the gap between being a massive heritage producer and a favorite for the most discerning palates, making them a cornerstone of the American whiskey world. In the past few years, they have released 19, 20 & 22 year olds that have huge followings and are highly appreciated.
Each of these three distilleries have expensive statement bottles but also have highly regarded affordable choices. As an honorable choice, I’d throw Wild Turkey in here as well. All great choices if you’re looking to start or expand your collection. And if one were to include Tennessee Whiskey, Jack Daniels would always be in the conversation.
